All ingredients have a set date of expiry beyond which they are unable to use. Some ingredients can however be checked through simple tests to determine their freshness. Two such ingredients are the baking powder and baking soda, both widely used in baking. They may ruin your bakes if they have gone dead. Here is how you can check them.
Baking powder – Mix 1 tsp baking powder with 1/2 cup hot water. The mixture will produce bubbles if the baking powder is fresh. If not, there will be no bubbles.
Baking soda – Take 1/2 tsp of baking soda and add 2-3 drops of vinegar or lemon juice. It should bubble vigorously if the baking soda is fresh else the baking soda is unfit for use.
